National Adaptation Plan (NAP) of Bangladesh

The NAP vision has been materialized and the subsequent goals conceptualized via taking into consideration some key aspects. As rampage of climate change-induced calamities exert insecurities to life, livelihood, and the country’s economy, bringing potential damages to a minimum and overcoming losses to GDP is a top priority. The promotion of green growth strategies, backed by sustainable nature-based solutions for balancing economic growth and environmental sustainability, has been sought as a means of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA). Sustainable socio-economic development through long-term adaptation strategies and integration of CCA into the planning process is key to adopting a planned adaptation approach.

Careful consideration of the relevant aspects has culminated into the overarching NAP vision:

“Reducing climate risks through effective adaptation strategies for fostering a resilient society, ecosystem and sustainable economic growth”

Among the six goals, the first four goals focus on devising adaptation for considered priority sectors and cross-cutting sectors the last two addresses more on institutional aspects to facilitating the smooth implementation of NAP.

The NAP process envisions to set-up a strong institution arrangement and effective coordination mechanism with horizontal and vertical linkages through stocktaking of institutional capacity, barriers, and gaps, assessing the need for implementation and coordination, considering existing institutional arrangement and governance, devising proper resources mobilization strategies and finally developing effective result-based monitoring and evaluation framework (M&E). Efforts focus on integrating adaptation into national planning and mainstreaming opportunities, prioritizing CCA, conducting sectoral dialogues, and finally integrating into macro-plans and development processes.
